Montager

For the Flickr mash-up discovery exercise, I chose the montager program. I spent way more time with this app than I had expected.

Montager allows a Flickr user to search through the massive tag index in the Flickr community. A program then chooses a photo that is usually related to your search, and then creates a large-scale montage replica of that photo using hundreds of other photos in the Flickr-verse that contain the same tag.

I am a big fan of Jimi Hendrix, so I did a tag search of "hendrix." A photo of Jimi Hendrix jamming at the Wreck Bar was chosen as the template, and then 500 images tagged with "hendrix" are slightly color-altered and arranged into a design that approximates the master photo. I can't even begin to think how this program was conceived and coded!
